MEAN presents service award to Glenwood Springs' Doug Hazzard

The Municipal Energy Agency of Nebraska (MEAN) presented Doug Hazzard, electric department superintendent for the City of Glenwood Springs, Colo., with its Rudy Hultgren Dedicated Service Award May 18 at the MEAN Board of Directors quarterly meeting in Kearney, Neb.

The award is presented annually to an individual of a MEAN member utility who has displayed commendable efforts in promoting the use of public power and its ideals. MEAN, the wholesale power supply organization of NMPP Energy, serves wholesale power supply and related services to more than 60 communities in Colorado, Iowa, Nebraska and Wyoming. The award is a memorial tribute to Rudy Hultgren, a utility consultant and well-known and respected citizen of Lyons, Colo., who played an active role in community service and leadership.

Hazzard has served the City of Glenwood Springs for 33 years, leading the electric department’s efforts in completing numerous projects, including:

  • Purchasing and upgrading three substations,
  • Electric distribution system upgrades,
  • Implementation of a full AMI (Automated Meter Infrastructure) metering system,
  • Planning and removal of overhead poles and electric lines to underground conduit, and years of planning and consultant coordination on hundreds of projects.

Hazzard’s award nomination cited his exemplary management skills and extensive knowledge of Glenwood Springs’ electric distribution system.

As the recipient of the award, Hazzard received $350 which will be designated to go to a community project or group.
